What skincare do I need before and after facial surgery?

If you’re considering a facelift (rhytidectomy) or booked in for facial surgery, did you know getting skin in optimum condition can help maximise results and recovery? Aysha Awwad, director of Cosmedix UK reveals her recommendations for the best products to use pre and post surgery.

PRE-SURGERY

TREATMENT

“It’s important to improve skin’s density ahead of facial surgery such as a facelift and a mirco-needling facial is a great way to do this. With a 0.5 needle and a feathering technique, it’s less traumatic on skin and creates channels to increase penetration of active ingredients. There’s thought to be 400% increase in absorption with this method. We then apply a 10% retinol + 20% vitamin C for collagen boosting and LED light like Lightfusion™ uses two clinically proven wavelengths – 633nm or red light and 830nm near infra red light – to stimulate the energy source of skin cells. This has been clinically proven to produce a cascade of cellular processes that stimulate collagen and elastin production. This also improves blood flow and tissue oxygenation helping skin cells absorb topical skincare products. Red and infrared light helps to reduce inflammation, accelerate wound healing, reduce brown spots and pigmentation and improve skin tone and texture instantly and over time.over the peel to stimulate activity in the skin and enhance effects of treatment. There’ll be no dry skin immediately but around three days later you’ll experience some dryness and redness but nothing traumatic.”

PRODUCTS

“Cosmedix X Age is a serum packed with highly active ingredients. It targets hydration and renewal by infusing the skin with Hyaluronic Acid. It also contains phyto-oestregens to correct skin on a cellular level. A good product to consider prior to surgery as mature skin is usually dryer and this will plump it with natural oils.”

“Rx Clean Cleanser is a gel-based exfoliating cleanser to help remove any build up of dead skin cells on the surface of skin. Containing AHAs and 10% l-lactic acid it can also be used as a mask – simply leave on for three minutes and the lactic acid will penetrate into skin and help remove skin’s unwanted debris. The large 150ml bottle will last your up to three months making it excellent value for money.”
