At Karidis we’re passionate about skin health – the healthier you are on the inside, the more your skin will glow on the outside. Nutritionist Kim Pearson agrees: “Eating a diet rich in skin-essential nutrients will nourish skin and optimise its health in a number of different ways.”

TOP 5 FOODS FOR HAPPY, HEALTHY SKIN:

1. WALNUTS

A vegan sourse of omega-3. This type of fatty acid can help reduce inflammation, boost hydration and prevent breakouts. “Dry skin is often due to a lack of omega 3 in the diet,” say Kim.

TIP: Soak overnight to release the nut’s phytic acid, which can interfere with the absorption of nutrients and irritate digestion.

2. BERRIES

“Rich in antioxidants, berries help to combat free radical damage to slow down premature ageing,” says Kim.

TIP: Go for berries with rich colours, such as dark red, purple or black as they contain the highest level of antioxidants for optimum skin health.

3. TOMATOES

These contain lycopene – a poweful antioxidant which has been shown to protect skin from sun damage.

TIP: Some foods are more beneficial eaten raw, but the lycopene in tomatoes is only released with heat so use more tomotoes in your cooking to reap the benefits. Cue the mediterranean diet!

4. LEMONS

“Lemons and other citrus foods are a good source of vitamin C which is essential for collagen production,” says Kim.

TIP: Lemons also help to break down fat so squeeze liberally over food to aid digestion.

5. GREENS

We’ve all heard the saying, eat your greens, advice we should follow for fabulous skin. “Spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables are rich in skin-healthy nutrients, especially betacarotene which is a poweful antioxidant that converts to vitamin A, essential for healthy skin cell turnover,” explains Kim.

TIP: Add raw spinach to smoothies or juices to retain and absorb maximum amount of nutrients.
