With summer upon us and temperatures heating up, the pressure is on to reveal perfect summer legs, whether in our bikini on the beach, showcasing that perfect wedding outfit or on a sultry date night out.

Here’s our top procedures for achieving flawless legs this summer:

# 1: Varicose vein treatment

There’s a common perception that bulging, unsightly varicose veins only affect older women, but age has nothing to do with it. “On rare occasions, you’ll see teenagers with these problems, but it’s quite common to see patients from their 20s onwards,” Consultant Vascular Surgeon and our varicose vein specialist Mr David Greenstein explains. “And it’s best to treat varicose veins, from a cosmetic point of view, as soon as they start to develop. If you leave them till later, it’s still possible to make the legs look very good but it will take more work and in the meantime the patient has been living for longer with unsightly veins that are causing them a great deal of distress.

“A lot of patients say afterwards that if they’d known it was so simple and quick to get rid of their varicose veins, they would have done it years ago.”

# 2: CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is an innovative, non-surgical approach to fat reduction; it works by cooling the targeted fat cells until they are crystallised. The frozen fat cells die and are then safely eliminated by the body, revealing smaller, more sculpted contours to the thighs and hips. No incisions or anaesthesia are required and there’s no downtime.

However, it’s important to understand there are limitations. “If you felt that you didn’t want to go down the surgical route for any reason, there are non-surgical options that can help,” our medical director Mr Alex Karidis confirms: “And that’s the key word, they can ‘help’.

“At the Karidis Clinic we offer non-surgical fat reduction in the form of CoolSculpting for those patients that do not want surgery. It is slower to work – for every target area you treat, you’ll only get a 20% improvement in the area in one session, so you’ll require a follow-up session a few weeks later to get another 20% improvement and so on.

“But you don’t have the same downtime as you would after a surgical fat reduction procedure, so as long as the patient is fully aware of the limitations as well as the benefits of each procedure option, they can make the decision that’s best for them.”

# 3: Lipo for legs

Whether it’s advertised as laser liposuction, vaser lipo, ultrasound-assisted lipo or power-assisted liposuction, this is the gold standard of fat reduction in the eyes of Mr Karidis.

Liposuction, particularly micro-liposuction, can also treat leg ‘problem areas’ that are resistant to other treatments. “The ankle and knee area are a common concern as many women feel their ankles or knees are totally out of proportion to the rest of their leg shape.

“These areas are a more challenging area to treat as the fat is very superficial and there is a delicate structure of nerves, veins and tendons beneath the fat that you must avoid disrupting. Choosing an experienced and qualified surgeon is a must to produce optimal results.”
