What are cheek fillers?
Hyaluronic acid (HA), otherwise known as dermal filler, is a botanical sugar, gel-like substance that resembles the natural HA in our body. It is designed to increase the volume of depressed skin tissue. Although HA is naturally occurring in our bodies, as we age, HA is synthesised faster than it is made, causing skin to become less elastic, less hydrated and particularly depleted in volume around the cheeks.
Cheek fillers are suitable for all age groups, both males and females. Cheek fillers can be used to either create a more enhanced definition to the cheek bone or to replace lost volume caused by ageing or weight-loss. The required volume of filler can range from 1 ml to 3 mls depending on desired results and this is decided between the patient and the nurse during consultation.
The results can be seen immediately, but continue to improve over the following 2 weeks. This is because hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic. This means that its moisture binding molecules attract and retain water to the area plumping and hydrating the skin on the surface giving even more defined look.
As the cheek is volumised, it also provides the support and structure to muscles and ligaments and so the skin around the jaw is slightly lifted. This also makes the jawline more defined and enhances the profile of the chin.
The procedure takes up to 30 minutes and the effects last up to 18 months.
Within 24 hours of the procedure, patients can expect a small degree of swelling, bruising and redness, but this is usually easily masked with makeup, so patients can return to work the same day.
The patient in the pictures shown was treated with 1 ml of Voluma by Juvederm to create the desired, very subtle lift and contour enhancement. Each patient’s requirements and personal preferences are different, so you will find the amount of filler injected may vary, however Karidis’ preference is to always create a more natural and flawless looking finish for our patients.
