What is ultherapy?

A non-invasive ultrasound treatment, ultherapy – also known as a ‘non-surgical facelift’ – lifts and firms the skin of the face and neck and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the decolletage.

It is the ideal procedure to achieve a younger, fresher looking appearance.

Am I suitable for ultherapy?

You’ll benefit from ultherapy treatment if:

  • Your skin is lacking firmness
  • You’ve noticed a lowered brow line
  • You have loose skin on your face, neck or chest
  • You have sagging skin under your chin
  • You have lines or wrinkles on your chest

A consultation is the best way to determine if you’re a suitable candidate for ultherapy.

How does ultherapy work?

A handheld ultrasound imaging device allows the clinician to see beneath the surface of the skin, allowing them to focus targeted ultrasound beams at the right depth beneath the surface of the skin.

These focused ultrasound beams heat the deep tissues under the skin, without disturbing the surface of the skin.

As the tissues are heated they are ‘remodelled’, which which leads to the formation of new collagen and elastin, shrinkage and firming of loose skin and tightening of the skin and deeper muscle layers.

The length of the treatment will depend on the area being treated, but as an estimate a face and neck procedure typically takes between 60 – 90 minutes, whilst a chest procedure takes around 30 minutes.

Which areas can be treated with ultherapy?

Ultherapy is typically used to treat the face and neck, with noticeable results on the cheeks, jaw and brow.

Other areas of the body such as the arms, knees or abdomen may benefit from ultherapy, but further research is required.

Does ultherapy hurt?

You may notice a slight tingling feeling when the ultrasound beams are delivered, but this should cause no more than mild discomfort. Numbing treatments can be used prior to the procedure to reduce any discomfort.

Your skin may feel tight after the procedure, but this is only temporary.

When will I see results after ultherapy?

While you may notice a slight improvement in the look of your skin immediately after ultherapy, lasting effects will be visible around 2-3 months after the procedure, as your collagen levels regenerate.

How long the effects last depends on your own natural ageing process. On average, results should last between 2 and 5 years. To prolong your results, you should aim to:

  • Take good care of your skin
  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun
  • Stop smoking

Are there any side effects from ultherapy?

Your skin may appear flushed immediately after the procedure, but any redness should fade within a few hours.

You may experience some slight swelling, tingling or tenderness, but these are temporary.

If you have sensitive skin, you may experience some slight temporary bruising or numbness, but these will fade.

How long does it take to recover from ultherapy?

There is no downtime following ultherapy – you can resume all your normal day to day activities immediately after the treatment, with no need for any post-procedure aftercare.
