Skin tags are tiny pieces of hanging, soft skin. They can develop anywhere on the body, with or without a stalk. They most commonly develop on areas which rub against clothing or skin.

Skin tags are usually harmless. However, they can understandably affect self-confidence. They can also be uncomfortable if they frequently rub against the skin.

What causes skin tags?

Skin tags or acrochordons are benign skin growths that develop in the folds of the body, such as the underarms, neck, eyelids and groin area. Their exact cause isn’t known, though they are thought to develop due to friction.

Some studies have also linked skin tag development to insulin resistance, HPV, and pregnancy. They are not contagious and most of the time they are painless.

Are skin tags a sign of something serious?

Skin tags are not usually a sign of anything serious. They are harmless lumps which at the worst, may cause discomfort. However, it is possible to mistake cancerous lesions as skin tags.

Whenever you have any new growth on the body, it should be checked out by a doctor. This will ensure that you are dealing with a skin tag, and not something more serious.
