How to get rid of crepey skin

Crepey skin occurs due to a lack of elastin and collagen, the naturally occurring components of the skin that provides its strength and suppleness. As we age, they naturally deplete and the skin begins to appear fragile, wrinkled, and may feel looser. Very similar to wrinkles, but crepey skin can affect larger areas of the body and the skin feels thinner.

What causes crepey skin?

  • Sun damage
  • Age
  • Hormonal changes
  • Weight loss

Ways to get rid of crepey skin

The treatments for getting rid of crepey skin vary according to where it is on the body.

  1. Abdominoplasty

Even very toned and slim women can suffer from crepey skin on the abdomen as a result of loss of skin elasticity as they age. An abdominoplasty (also referred to as a ‘tummy tuck’) can tighten abdominal muscles and remove excess fat, but it’s also possible just to treat excess, sagging skin from the abdominal region. Liposuction is often carried out alongside this procedure. Here at Karids, we also offer mini abdominoplasty which targets your lower abdomen, rather than the whole stomach area.

  1. Thigh lift

Crepey skin can also appear on the upper thighs as we get older and no cream or serum can improve its appearance. A thigh lift is a surgical operation that lifts and tightens the loose skin folds of the thighs and reduces the excess skin, leaving a firmer, smoother contour. This surgery is usually concentrated on the excess skin of the inner thigh region and does not lift the front or back of the thigh. Liposuction is often performed alongside this surgical procedure also.

  1. Ultherapy

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive skin tightening procedure which has been FDA-cleared. We use this treatment at our London clinic to lift skin on the neck, under the chin and on the eyebrow. It is also clinically proven to improve the appearance of crepey skin on the décolletage.

The ideal candidate for Ultherapy is typically someone who has some mild to moderate degree of skin laxity that wants to improve his or her skin firmness and volume and perhaps is not fully ready for a surgical skin tightening procedure such as a facelift.

  1. Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers help to restore our skin its former youthful appearance to be more aesthetically pleasing. This treatment is often used to treat ageing hands where the skin often looks thin and wrinkled as you lose volume as you get older.
