Although breast implants typically last for several years, there are many reasons for patients to choose to undergo revision breast augmentation surgery, and the good news is that it is perfectly safe. In fact, second breast augmentation procedures are increasingly common.
Here are a few reasons why you might be considering a second breast augmentation:
To increase the implant size
Many women are conservative in the choice of implant first time around, opting for something smaller and less ‘noticeable’. This can mean that after a while, once they have got used to their new, fuller cup size, they realise that actually it is not as full as they would like. In this instance, revision breast surgery is performed to remove the existing implants and replace them with new, larger ones. Even when you have undergone the same procedure before, it is still important to have a full consultation beforehand, to ensure that you feel confident you are making the right decision this time around.
To reduce breast implant size
Some women, on the other hand, feel that they overestimated the size of breast they would be comfortable with. Sometimes this is something that happens a few years down the line, perhaps due to a change in lifestyle, or sometimes it happens sooner after the original surgery. It is always advisable, however, to wait for at least a year after the operation before undergoing further surgery, both to allow your body to heal fully, and to give yourself time to adjust to your new figure.
To reflect a change in body shape
When you gain or lose a lot of weight and you don’t have breast implants, your breasts tend to change shape with you – although this is not without its problems! But when you do have breast implants, your breasts will remain the same size and shape no matter how much the rest of your body might fluctuate. Some women are perfectly happy with this, but some patients find that having incongruously large or small breasts compared to the rest of their body makes them self-conscious, and in this instance, revision breast augmentation or reduction can be performed.
To remove the implants
The breast implants we use at Karidis Clinic have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they comply with the highest safety standards. However, there is always a tiny risk inherent in inserting any foreign body beneath the skin, and there are certain breast implant complications to be aware of, such as capsular contracture.
If you decide to have your breast implants removed, you have several options. These include removing the implants with no further surgery, replacing the implants, or a breast lift with or without implants to address any changes that have occurred since your primary surgery.
