Top plastic surgery procedures revealed in survey

Why is blepharoplasty so popular

Trends come and go, but certain plastic surgery procedures remain popular, as revealed in the latest US data. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (AAFPRS) has revealed the results of its annual survey, detailing the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures last year, as reported by AAFPRS members.

The changing face of cosmetic surgery

The survey results really highlight how much the field of facial plastic surgery has been changed by the rise of weight loss medications like Ozempic. We have previously reported on the phenomenon of the ‘Ozempic face’, where such rapid weight loss leads to gaunt faces that are old ahead of their time, so it is interesting to see this confirmed by the survey results.

AAFPRS members reported a 50% increase in fat-grafting procedures – a treatment designed to restore lost volume to the face – which is claimed to be linked to the use of weight loss medication. One in four surgeons surveyed said that they are expecting an increased demand for non-surgical options such as dermal fillers as patients continue to seek less invasive ways to combat the ageing effects of Ozempic.

The most popular facial cosmetic surgery procedures revealed

The top three procedures reported in 2024 are consistent with the past five years’ surveys, with rhinoplasty (nose job), facelift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) holding their positions. Rhinoplasty continues to hold the top spot, although interestingly a high number of surgeons surveyed said that a significant proportion (around 10%) of their rhinoplasty patients came to them seeking revision of a previous nose job, highlighting the importance of choosing the right surgeon in the first place.

Why is rhinoplasty so popular?

Rhinoplasty can be performed either for cosmetic reasons, to approve the appearance of the nose, or for structural ones – to help with breathing, for example. This second purpose may go some way to explain its continuing popularity.

However, the beauty of aesthetic rhinoplasty surgery is that you can significantly improve the overall appearance of your face with relatively minimal alterations to the nose. The most common reason to undergo rhinoplasty is to achieve improved facial balance and symmetry, and a skilled rhinoplasty surgeon will also consider the angle of the cheekbones, jawline and chin.

Why are facelifts so popular?

While non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments can greatly reduce the signs of ageing, there is nothing quite like a facelift to strip back the years. With a facelift, you can:

  • Tighten sagging skin
  • Smooth out wrinkles – even deep ones!
  • Get rid of jowls
  • Eliminate a double chin

All in one procedure! So, it is no surprise that facelift surgery has been the second most popular cosmetic facial surgery for five years running.

Why is blepharoplasty so popular?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can create a subtle but highly effective change in your appearance. You can shave years off by gently tightening the skin around the eyes and creating a youthful sparkle without anyone suspecting you’ve been under the knife.

To treat hooded eyes, you can undergo upper or lower blepharoplasty or both, remove undereye bags and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles in the eye area.
