Skin lumps and bumps are abnormalities that occur on the surface of the skin or just below in the upper layer of the dermis. The good news that most of these blemishes are benign, which means non-cancerous, but can be a cosmetic concern.
A wart is a small, rough growth that can appear on the surface of the skin and can present anywhere on the body. Commonly, they appear on the hands. Plantar warts form on the soles of the feet, particularly the balls or heels which receive the most pressure. This typically causes the wart to grow inwards and is often known as a verruca.
They are situated in the top layer of the dermis and are formed of the protein keratin. If they have a black dot in them this is a clotted blood vessel.
The first step is to arrange a consultation with a specialist who can give you a correct diagnosis and advise whether you require treatment or further investigation.
