What is a wart?

Skin lumps and bumps are abnormalities that occur on the surface of the skin or just below in the upper layer of the dermis. The good news that most of these blemishes are benign, which means non-cancerous, but can be a cosmetic concern.

A wart is a small, rough growth that can appear on the surface of the skin and can present anywhere on the body. Commonly, they appear on the hands. Plantar warts form on the soles of the feet, particularly the balls or heels which receive the most pressure. This typically causes the wart to grow inwards and is often known as a verruca.

They are situated in the top layer of the dermis and are formed of the protein keratin. If they have a black dot in them this is a clotted blood vessel.

The first step is to arrange a consultation with a specialist who can give you a correct diagnosis and advise whether you require treatment or further investigation.

Why might you want your wart removed?

Warts will often resolve without medical intervention as the body fights off the virus. But, they often spread and you may feel embarrassed as well as discomfort depending on where the wart is located.

How is wart removal performed?

There are a range of treatments for wart removal including cryotherapy, laser surgery, use of salicylic acid and immunotherapy. If other treatment options do not resolve the issue, surgical excision may be used to cut away the wart.

Our surgeon will inject local anaesthetic in the treatment area, before making an incision into your skin to cut out the wart. The base of the wart will be destroyed and cauterised using an electric needle. A stitch may be required to close the wound.

If necessary, it may be sent for histological examination at the hospital. It will be tested for any abnormalities which may indicate cancer. He will then use stiches or medical glue to close the skin.
