Scarring, or rather potential scarring, is probably the single most important consideration that people have when they undergo surgery. And of course like any surgeon, it is important that I try to explain to patients what the likely scarring from any operation might be.
Firstly I explain the location of where they can expect the scars for any given operation. I also try to explain how long or extensive the scars will likely be. Thankfully with modern surgical techniques, scars have gradually and steadily reduced in size from years gone by with many scars being 5 cm or less. Nonetheless with operations like Abdominoplasties (or Tummy tucks as they are called) scars will be quite long, extending from hip bone to hip bone. However even these scars are usually situated quite low down, normally hidden beneath the pantyline.
And here is the thing. As Plastic Surgeons we are masters of deception! We constantly and regularly plan our scar sites in areas where other people’s gaze doesn’t naturally fall upon. So unless you know where to look, the casual onlooker is unlikely to notice these.
Having said all this, scar quality will always vary from individual to individual and guarantees or warranties are impossible to give. However, modern surgical techniques and expertise has allowed us to give any scar the best chance of healing, by careful tissue handling and suturing precisely but ultimately every individual will heal differently.
The good news however is that there are ways to improve scars in the post-operative period for everyone with the use of various creams, oils and substances and thus we always advise our patients accordingly. But in the end it is, as they say, that great phrase “time is the great healer” that plays the most important role. Given enough time and scar attention however, most scars soften, pale and make themselves quite inconspicuous.
