The state of our pores can play a significant role in how our skin appears. When they become enlarged and open, they are easily visible to the naked eye. Enlarged pores are most noticeable on the nose and across the cheeks and they can be more noticeable on male skin as it is oilier.
What causes open and large pores?
There could be a number of things contributing towards the development of open pores. High oil production levels, genetics, reduced elasticity, and thick hair follicles are just some of the common causes.
Technically, all pores are open. However, certain factors such as the ones mentioned above, can cause them to enlarge and become more noticeable. They can also worsen due to ageing and overexposure to the sun’s UV rays.
Does the sun make open pores worse?
Exposing the skin to the sun’s UV rays can make open pores more visible. There is some evidence to suggest that those who regularly tan in the sun have naturally larger open pores. Over time, this will result in a patchy, rough texture on the skin. Protecting the skin against the UV rays will therefore help to prevent open pores from worsening.
