Facial lines are most commonly associated with ageing. However, did you know you can also develop lines and wrinkles on the face due to excessive weight loss?
The folds and wrinkles that develop in the mid-face, whether due to weight loss or the ageing process, are known as marionette lines and nasolabial folds.
What is the difference between marionette lines and nasolabial folds?
Marionette lines develop between the mouth and the chin. They can cause the lower half of the face to sag, along with wrinkles around the mouth. They are caused by a lack of collagen, and they don’t affect everyone. Experts are unsure why some people develop them, and others don’t. However, those who shed a lot of weight are known to be more susceptible.
Nasolabial folds stretch from the nose to the corners of the mouth and are a common ageing concern, often appearing more noticeable when you smile. When the skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity and you lose volume in the mid-face, it causes the nasolabial folds to become much more prominent.
Is there a difference between male and female ageing?
Men and women do age slightly differently. Men’s skin tends to be thicker and firmer because they have more elastin and collagen than women. This means they age at a slower pace, whereas female skin ageing can be accelerated by fluctuating hormone levels. Their skin tends to also be oiler.
Facial hair also helps to protect men’s skin against UV rays. This too can delay the signs of ageing on the face.

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that can improve the most visible signs of the ageing process by eliminating excess fat, tightening and elevating the muscles beneath the skin of the face and by removing or repositioning sagging skin.
