One look at social media and you could be blamed for thinking the perfect pout is oversized and artificial. However, a new study has identified the most attractive lip shape as natural and harmonious which completely aligns with the Karidis Clinic ethos of injecting with integrity and subtlety, delivering naturally beautiful results.
Researchers in the US used eye-tracking software to indicate which lip shape was considered most attractive. The results were published in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Dr Sebastian Cotofana of the Mayo Clinic and his colleagues started with a stock image of a young woman which they digitally altered to produce a range of different lip proportions and volume. Observers with no background in aesthetics were asked to rate the images for attractiveness. Tracking technology was also used to see what facial feature caught the eye.
The lip proportion that was rated the most attractive was 1 to 1.6 in terms of upper to lower lip. This proportion is generally accepted as the golden ration for beautiful lips. Interestingly, the image that showed the pout enlarged to 130% of their natural volume received one of the lowest ratings.
The lips signify youth and beauty and, as a result, lip augmentation has become increasingly popular in recent years with women of all ages. Some may have always been dissatisfied with their lip shape or size, whereas others have seen less than welcome changes as they have got older. In fact, the lips are particularly susceptible to revealing the signs of ageing, becoming thinner and wider with loss of definition of the vermillion border, flattening of the cupid’s bow and development of perioral lines. The nasolabial folds surrounding the mouth become more obvious and oral commissures form which is when the corners of the mouth begin to turn downwards.
Lip augmentation at our London clinic
In younger patients, any enhancement of the lip shape or size must take into account their other facial features to ensure the lips remain balanced. Rather than overfilling the lips, our injectors place dermal filler at strategic points. A natural looking pout doesn’t necessarily mean boosting the entire lip, but instead adding volume in the cupid’s bow or corners of the mouth.
Lip rejuvenation at Karidis
To restore a more youthful appearance to the lips, our injectors assess the patient’s individual ageing concerns and several techniques may be employed. The definition of the vermillion border and cupid’s bow must be strengthened and lengthening of the upper lip reversed, as well as addressing overall volume loss. Our injectors will assess the whole mouth area, also treating oral commissures, perioral lines and the nasolabial folds if required.
