We all have body bits that we are self-conscious of, and for many men and women the stomach area is their chief concern, so it’s not surprising that one of the most frequently asked questions we’re asked is how to get rid of belly fat. Weight fluctuations, natural ageing and pregnancy can all contribute to a less than pleasing abdomen appearance.

Is belly fat the problem?

Excess fat can be one of several issues affecting the abdomen. Loose, excess skin and lax muscles causing an abdominal protrusion can also affect the appearance of the belly.

During your consultation, you’ll be thoroughly assessed and then Mr Alex Karidis can then advise which surgical or non-surgically body contouring procedure will achieve the results you’re hoping for.

Belly fat: everyone stores fat differently. Men are more susceptible to storing fat in the abdominal area, whereas women are more likely to pear shaped and store fat in their buttocks, hips and thighs.

Lax muscles: weight gain and pregnancy can cause the abdominal muscles to stretch and make it impossible to tone the stomach up. A condition known as diastasis recti is common after pregnancy and occurs when the right and left sides of rectus abdominis become separated.

Skin laxity: although it is usually caused when our body weight fluctuates and the skin stretches, even very slim and toned men and women can be prone to sagging skin because of the natural ageing process. Collagen and elastin are the components in the dermis that provide support and elasticity to the skin, and they naturally break down as we get older.

Treatments to eliminate belly fat

Tummy tuck: the surgical solution to all abdominal concerns, an abdominoplasty can tighten the abdominal muscles, remove excess skin and produce a slimmer, flatter tummy.

Liposuction: a body sculpting procedure that permanently removes unwanted excess fat from specific areas of the body such as the tummy. Lipo doesn’t address excess skin so it’s essential you have good skin elasticity.

Diastasis recti repair: the abdominal muscles are tightened and then sutured into position.

CoolSculpting: a minimally invasive alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting permanently eradicates stubborn pockets of fat by freezing the fat cells.

Bodylift: a comprehensive cosmetic surgical procedure designed to address sagging or excess skin and fat around the midsection of the body.
