This week has been Men’s Health Awareness Week with the focus on both physical and emotional wellbeing. Plastic surgery is sometimes portrayed in the media as a frivolous choice, but there’s a growing body of research on its psychological effects and many studies show that plastic surgery patients show significant improvement in their self-esteem post-surgery.
A recent study carried out at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine examined the psychological outcomes following a surgical procedure. More than 87% of patients said they were satisfied with the surgery and felt fewer negative emotions about their appearance when in social situations.
Most in-demand male plastic surgery procedures
The most recent cosmetic surgery figures released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, an independent worldwide group of plastic surgeons, highlighted the top five surgical procedures for men.
- Liposuction
- Gynecomastia
- Blepharoplasty
- Rhinoplasty
- Abdominoplasty
What’s interesting about this data is that the most popular procedures can have a profound impact on self-confidence as well as improving physical health. Mr Alex Karidis has become renowned for male breast reduction surgery due to his impeccable stitching technique and expertise in this operation. Gynecomastia can affect men of all ages, but young men can be particularly susceptible, and male breast reduction surgery can greatly boost self-esteem.
Our patient’s gynecomastia surgery story
Body image was very important to body builder and fitness enthusiast Daniel Yeomans:
“My gynecomastia first became noticeable around 2012. Day to day, day to day is tough I won’t lie. It is a constant reminder that I am flawed, I have an imperfection that’s noticeable and it effects the things I am mostly passionate about, one being competing. It’s had a deep mental effect on me not just physical. That’s why I needed to take action.”
“I can’t be more grateful for the guys at Karidis. They’ve actually given me now the opportunity to chase my dreams. So many people hide away from their fears, doubts and uncertainty. The advice I would offer is book it and go and see someone.”
Our patient’s rhinoplasty story
Male rhinoplasty or nose surgery can be performed to improve both form and function. As the nose is the central feature of the face, this surgery can have a dramatic impact on a patient’s appearance.
In this video, our patient Daniel chats to Mr Karidis at his one-month check-up and explains how his male rhinoplasty procedure has changed his life:
“I was really nervous before, but I think it helps you turn over a new leaf in your life. The moment you get rid of something that’s been on your mind and holding you back, then you can move on. So, from that point of view, I think it’s changed my life.”
Our patient’s miraDry story
Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that’s officially estimated to affect approximately 1% of the UK population, although it’s thought that the true prevalence could be much higher as many people do not realise that there are treatment options and do not seek help.
Personal trainer Nicholas Polo discovered that miraDry is a highly effective and long-lasting treatment for excessive sweating and he explains how it has transformed his life:
“I do women’s combat self-defence and that that involves a lot of physical contact, and I became self-conscious that I sweated more than the average person. The day after my miraDry treatment, I started training clients again and it’s been life changing. I would definitely recommend miraDry to anyone who was self-conscious about sweating.”
